Whey Protein Isolate vs Concentrate: What’s the Difference?
WPI and WPC are both whey proteins. The main practical difference is how much of the powder is protein and how much carbohydrate, lactose and fat remains. The exact label varies by product.
WPI is filtered further and is generally more concentrated with less lactose and fat; WPC is often less expensive and can be a perfectly reasonable choice when its label fits your needs.
| Check | Whey protein isolate (WPI) | Whey protein concentrate (WPC) |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | More filtration to increase the protein proportion. | Concentrated whey; the level depends on the ingredient grade and product. |
| Protein per 100 g | Typically higher. Use the finished powder’s nutrition panel. | Typically lower than isolate, but products and flavours vary. |
| Lactose and fat | Generally lower; not necessarily zero. | Generally higher; check the label if this matters to you. |
| Price | Often more expensive per kilogram. | Often less expensive; compare cost per actual protein. |
| Who might prefer it? | Someone prioritising concentration or seeking a lower-lactose option. | Someone wanting a lower-cost whey and comfortable with the product’s label. |
Is WPI “better” than WPC?
Not as a universal rule. If you compare like-for-like protein amounts and your overall diet, training and preferences, the isolate label does not by itself prove a better outcome. WPI’s greater concentration can be convenient; WPC may cost less. Choose based on the product’s actual nutrition, the reason you are buying it, tolerance and price.
Does WPI have no lactose?
Do not assume that. Further filtration generally reduces lactose, but “isolate” does not mean that every finished powder is lactose-free. Check the manufacturer’s current nutrition and allergen information and seek qualified advice if you have a diagnosed allergy or medical dietary restriction.
How to compare two tubs
- Compare protein grams per 100 g for the same flavour type.
- Check the full ingredients and allergen statement.
- Look for product-specific testing and source details.
- Compare the price for the same quantity of protein.

The One Percent Better Protein Index currently scores WPI products and keeps flavour groups separate.
