How to Choose Creatine: What Actually Matters
Start with the ingredient and serving amount. Then check the product's evidence, price and source record. Fancy packaging, a proprietary blend or a high star rating does not make creatine monohydrate more effective.
Choose a clearly labelled creatine monohydrate, verify branded-ingredient and certification claims against the exact product, compare cost per 5 g, and treat reviews as customer feedback—not evidence of purity.
1. Check the ingredient form
For a plain creatine product, the label should identify creatine monohydrate and make the amount per serve clear. The Australian Institute of Sport identifies creatine monohydrate as the supported form in its sports supplement guidance. Other formats or blends need their own evidence and should not be assumed equivalent.
2. Compare the actual dose
Check the grams of creatine monohydrate per serving, not just the scoop size. A 5 g serve is a useful comparison basis used by our Index, not a personal dose recommendation. Follow the label and seek qualified advice if you have a medical condition or take medicines.
3. Verify Creapure® claims at product level
Creapure® is a branded creatine monohydrate raw material. A tub saying “German creatine” or “Creapure®” is not the same as an exact product listing or valid verification code. Check the current register or quality-seal process and whether it matches the product you are considering.
4. Check sport certification separately
Certification for prohibited-substance screening asks a different question from creatine identity or performance. Confirm the exact product and current listing in the certifier's register; one certified product does not automatically cover every product from the same brand.
5. Separate raw-material origin from packing
“Packed in Australia” does not identify where the raw creatine was made. Look for the ingredient's origin and the final product's manufacturing or packing location as separate fields.
6. Compare cost per 5 g
Pack price alone is misleading when pack sizes differ. Divide the current pack price by the number of 5 g servings (or use the Index's normalized cost) and compare products on the same basis. If the price is missing, leave the value unknown rather than guessing.
7. Use reviews only for customer experience
Reviews can describe taste, solubility, packaging and delivery. They cannot prove identity, purity, certification or efficacy. Read the rating with the number and source of reviews.
