Marine vs Bovine Collagen: What’s the Difference?
Marine and bovine describe the source animal, not a complete quality grade. Compare the exact collagen type, processing, dose, disclosure and testing of the product you are considering.
Marine collagen is sourced from fish; bovine collagen is sourced from cattle. The source may matter for dietary preference, allergen information and traceability, but it does not establish a universal winner or prove that one product works better.
| Check | Marine collagen | Bovine collagen |
|---|---|---|
| Source disclosure | Look for fish species or source material where disclosed, and clear allergen information. | Look for animal source and whether hide, bone or another material is specified. |
| Type and form | Check stated collagen type and whether it is hydrolysed peptides or another form. | Check the same: the animal source alone does not tell you type or processing. |
| Evidence | Assess the exact ingredient, dose and outcome studied. Do not transfer a result between products automatically. | Use the same rule; evidence is product- and outcome-specific. |
| Practical choice | May suit people preferring a fish-derived ingredient, if appropriate for them. | May suit people preferring a bovine source, if appropriate for them. |
What does the evidence say about source?
The Australian Institute of Sport notes that source and specific peptide formulation can affect product characteristics, while available research does not support declaring one animal source universally superior. Its current guidance also emphasises that in-vivo research remains limited. That is why we record source transparently without treating “marine” or “bovine” as a score shortcut.
